What to Expect From Your Iron Infusion at The Iron Infusion Clinic
If you’ve never had an iron infusion before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure or nervous. Many of our patients tell us they don’t know what to expect, and that’s exactly why we take the time to explain everything clearly and carefully.
Our goal is to make your experience comfortable, unhurried, and reassuring, from the moment you arrive until you head home.
Before Your Appointment
Once your booking is confirmed, our reception team will guide you through the next steps. You’ll receive clear instructions and simple paperwork to complete before your visit, so there are no surprises on the day.
We’ll also let you know:
-
Whether you’ll receive an electronic prescription (e-script)
-
Whether you need to collect the iron medication from a pharmacy yourself, or
-
Whether your prescription will be sent directly to a partnering pharmacy
If anything is unclear, our team is always happy to help.
On the Day of Your Infusion
Arriving at the Clinic
Please arrive well hydrated and allow yourself a little extra time so you don’t feel rushed. We have clinics in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Toowoomba, all designed to be calm, private, and comfortable.
You’re welcome to bring a book, headphones, or your phone, but most people find the time passes quickly.
Your Consultation Comes First
Before any iron is given, you’ll have a one-on-one consultation with one of our Clinical Haematologists or Nurse Practitioners. Dr Joel Collins (our lead haematolgist) personally trains and overseas our nurse practitioners.
During this consultation, we will:
-
Review your blood tests with you
-
Discuss your symptoms and medical history
-
Explain why an iron infusion is recommended for you
-
Answer any questions or concerns you may have
There is no pressure to proceed until you feel comfortable and informed.
During the Iron Infusion
Your iron infusion will be administered by one of our highly trained and experienced registered nurses, who specialise in iron therapy.
What this usually involves:
-
A small cannula (drip) placed into a vein in your arm
-
The iron given through the drip (over 15-20 mins for adults and teenagers, or around 5 minutes for younger children)
-
You resting comfortably in a chair or bed throughout
Our nurses will monitor you closely and are with you the entire time.
Is It Safe?
Iron infusions are widely used and generally very well tolerated.
Most people experience no side effects at all. Some people may notice mild symptoms such as:
-
A headache or fatigue (5% of patients a few days after the infusion)
-
A flushed feeling or a rash (1-2% of patients)
-
Temporary muscle or joint aches (5% of patients)
Serious reactions are rare, with a reported true anaphylaxis rate of less than 1:100,000. However, our clinics are fully equipped to manage them should they occur. Your safety is our highest priority.
Iron skin staining is often discussed as a potential side effect. At The Iron Infusion Clinic, the risk is very low due to the experience of our clinical team and the high number of infusions we perform.
After Your Infusion
After the infusion is complete, you’ll be observed briefly before heading home.
Most people:
-
Feel well enough to drive themselves home
-
Can return to normal activities the same day
-
Do not need time off work
You’ll be given clear instructions about what to expect over the next few days and if follow-up blood tests are needed.
With your consent, we will also send a formal medical letter to your GP and any other involved doctors or specialists.
This letter will outline the reason for your iron infusion, the type of iron given, details of the procedure, and any recommended follow-up or next steps. A copy will also be uploaded to your health record so it is available for your own records and ongoing care.
When Will I Feel Better?
Everyone responds differently, but many patients begin to notice improvement in symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, or brain fog within 5-10 days.
Iron stores continue to replenish over time, and the full benefit is often seen over several weeks.
